In today’s post we discuss Jordan Spieth’s U.S. Open win and explain why age does no matter when it comes to achieving success.

jordan-spiethIt has been an unforgettable few months for 21-year-old golfer Jordan Spieth. He had his first major victory in April when he won the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club. He has now broken three big records following his win in the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay on Sunday. Not only is he the youngest golfer to win the U.S. Open since 1923, but also he is the youngest to win his second major since 1922. Most importantly, he is the youngest golfer to ever win two majors in the same year and is only the sixth golfer to ever accomplish this. He has joined the golfing greats Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Craig Wood and Ben Hogan in this outstanding achievement.

The Texan won the U.S. Open in stunning style to close the gap between his current number 2 world ranking and number one ranked Rory McIlroy. He came to the 16th tee tied with Branden Grace at -5, but finished the hole with a three-shot lead. He hung on to win by one stroke when Dustin Johnson three putted the last hole. Spieth is now focusing on his next big test – the British Open at St Andrews. He is seeking a third major victory in succession and could possibly become the first player since Bobby Jones to win all four majors in a calendar year.

Spieth’s win has highlighted how golf has become a young man’s game. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson used to dominate golfing tournaments but the young players have overshadowed them in recent years. Rory McIlroy, 26, holds four major titles while Rickie Fowler, also 26, is the Players Championship champion. During a recent press conference, Spieth expressed his excitement about being part of a young generation of players currently dominating golf: “It’s awesome that the game is in young hands.”

This proves that age doesn’t matter when it comes to achieving success. There will always be people who will think that you are either too young or too old to fulfill your dreams, but you can prove them wrong. I can remember turning 30 and thinking that people would now begin to take me seriously. It is common for everyone including insurance agency owners to worry that their health will affect their retirement plans. Interestingly, our experience is that most insurance agency owners feel that their health will never begin to fail and they never begin to plan for retirement. Regardless of how we perceive our health, we will begin to forget important things, develop pains in our bodies that they never had before or will have difficulties keeping abreast of emerging new technology. By leading a healthy and active lifestyle you can achieve incredible things, whether it is excelling at sport or in your professional life. The truth is you’re only as old as you feel. We have a former client who is a legend at Sukay & Associates. He was one of four partners that sold their agency in 2006. At that time he was 83 and still working full time. Nine years later he is still on the job. In fact, we were told that he just had his best year ever.
